La ciudad dispersa / The Scattered City
The urban environment of Lasarte-Oria embodies many of the problems of urban sprawl and fragmentation, resulting from the rapid processes of industrialization and deindustrialization that the Basque Country has undergone over the last century. To this phenomenon we can add the presence of the Oria River and the A-1 Highway as further fragmenting elements. On the other hand, the area also contains significant landscape and topographic features, as well as urban phenomena that offer great opportunities to address both urban and social reconnection.
2. RE-Inventing
The Productive Countryside
One of the great questions of architecture—thinking about the boundary between the city and the countryside—finds a new opportunity in the Lasarte-Oria project. A housing and production model is proposed that reinterprets the caserío (traditional Basque farmhouse) as a self-sufficient prototype, expanding, updating, and interconnecting it through a self-sufficient urban system that integrates new forms of urban activity and agroecological production models. These will function as an interface between city and countryside.
