RECOVERY OF THE PUBLIC MARKET
Roquetas de Mar (Almería)
The Market as a Festive Space
The new market faces the challenge of settling within the architectural patchwork and poor urban quality of its surroundings—remnants of the real estate bubble. The site is located between the urban fabric and the greenhouse territory of Almería. For this reason, the project seeks to connect these two contrasting landscapes through a strategy of spatial clarity, proposing a new open space for the city.
The project reclaims the spatial strategy of local vernacular architecture, as modern tradition has done in this region. It proposes a white box beneath the original roof structure, set on a perimeter platform that resolves accessibility issues while clearly accommodating all contemporary functions of a market. It emphasizes the feature that opens the building to the city, avoiding alignment with prevailing winds. In doing so, the roof regains its visual presence and the symbolic prominence it held in the original project.
