A Home in the Realejo District
Full Renovation Inspired by Fajalauza in the Heart of Granada
Casa Santiago, one of the most outstanding interventions by Álvaro Gor in Granada, represents a refined synthesis of tradition, landscape, and contemporary design. This integral renovation project not only transforms an existing home but also reinterprets the architectural memory of the Realejo neighborhood through a sensitive and modern lens.
Located in a historic urban setting, Casa Santiago is organized around a new spatial system that prioritizes natural light, visual continuity, and emotional connection with its environment. The intervention removes unnecessary partitions to generate open and flowing spaces, where materiality plays a key role.
A standout feature of the project is the use of Fajalauza ceramics, a pottery tradition from Granada with over five centuries of history. This choice not only honors the local craft but also builds a bridge between memory, material culture, and contemporary design. The ceramics function as a narrative surface, adding texture, identity, and warmth to the renovated interior.
The interior design of Casa Santiago draws inspiration from the abstract forms of mountains and topographies, evoking natural landscapes that connect emotionally with the owners’ passion for climbing. These references take shape in architectural elements that suggest organic volumes and reliefs, creating an atmosphere where nature and architecture merge.
The renovation also highlights the historical layers of the building, revealing original elements and establishing a respectful dialogue with them through new insertions. This strategy creates a timeless character where past and present coexist in harmony.
With Casa Santiago, Álvaro Gor reinforces an architectural approach that combines a deep understanding of local context with contemporary design sensibility.
