Competition for the Rehabilitation of the San Miguel Tower
Cabo de Gata (Almería)
Landscape Proposal
The landscape proposal is based on a simple and ecological layout that protects the vegetation of the coastal shoreline. A topography of ‘dunes’ is recreated, connecting with the San Miguel landscape and enhancing integration with the environment. This strategy prevents erosion and promotes plant growth without aggressive intervention.
Architectural Idea
The interior design focuses on a circular courtyard that harmonizes the historic architecture with a contemporary geometric language. This space visually connects the circularity of the tower with the surrounding rectangular walls, integrating elements such as a staircase that extends its monumental presence.
Circulations and Flows in the Surroundings
The landscape approach by the Granada-based architects avoids the use of vehicles on the beach, creating organized pedestrian routes and natural resting areas. A parking lot is planned on the outskirts of the urban core, with pedestrian access to the tower and a bus stop for guided tours. This strategy promotes sustainable tourism and preserves the natural landscape.
Circular Courtyard and Viewing Roof
An architectural intervention is proposed at a lower level in order not to alter the historic image of the tower. The project incorporates a roof-top viewing platform that continues the landscape language. This technical solution maintains the visual coherence of the environment and enhances the visitor experience with privileged views.
